Pokemon has had a strange journey. Over the years we've seen countless iterations (OK it can be counted, 36 to be exact), movies, tv shows, merchendise, a trading card game, and the list goes on. So why am I covering a horse being mercilessly beaten to death? Because Pokemon is still fun, people love it, possibly even more so as an adult. Collecting little dudes and leveling them up to fight to the death for you is entertainment hearkening back to mankind's time in Rome's Coliseum. Fight for me, minions!
However, this is not just another Pokemon game. This is taking the tried and true formula and moving it into the third dimension. Nintendo is taking a chance here, as the top down view of Ash running around catching poor helpless creatures is what everyone is used to. Sure the game has been in 3D before, sort of, on your home consoles. It wasn't true to Pokemon form though. This is full on Pokemon in full on 3D.
What we have here is a pretty cool shift in a pretty 'been done' genre. The cell shaded artwork reminds me of the later Wild Arms titles. With a vast land to explore, and over 50 new Pokemon to catch. This might be the most fun we've had with a new title in years.
Pokemon International's JC Smith has said in a recent interview that this is not a reboot, this is an evolution. "There's never been a conscious decision to reboot, it's just a decision to try new things and express the world in a new way. There's always been an evolution of the look and feel; it just happens to be that we played Black and White, and Heart Gold and Soul Silver, Diamond and Pearl, and Platinum - all of those games on the same platform. So it feels like it's been a long time in the same way. But between the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color, and moving up into the DS now, it's always had that change."
